WWII Digital Collection Day
Saturday 11th November 2023
On 11th November, The Cathedral School hosted a digital collection day for Their Finest Hour (www.theirfinesthour.org), a nationwide campaign run by Oxford University to conserve the memories and objects of WWII.
Sixth Form students and local volunteers from Llandaff over 50s recorded stories and digitised objects related to the Second World War from members of the community to preserve them for future generations.
One of the volunteers kindly made Ginger Buns, Oat Biscuits and Blitz Cake from 1941 recipes for visitors to try!
“Year 12 and 13 students interviewed everyone who came, and we were astonished at what we heard. Initially I was unsure what the day would entail, but I, like many others, found it to be an extremely rewarding opportunity. Even when the day reached a close, we all could have stayed and continued to discuss the fascinating information that was shared. It was also great to witness the pride of the storytellers, giving us an insight into life during those challenging times, with some being so unbelievable about what people endured. It was a very worthwhile use of my time and I know everyone felt the same. The importance of these events is unquestionable in preserving and celebrating the sacrifices that were made.”
